The Lockwood Family

Lockwood Family

The Lockwood Family is a main founding family in The Vampire Diaries. They are very rich due to their ancestors taking over the land belonging to the vampires of the tomb, in part or better because of this almost all mayors of Mystic Falls have belonged to this family. They also posess the werewolf gene but only a few of them have actually activated it.

Family TreeEdit Family Tree section

The Lockwood family tree is very complex and it depicts all the known members of the family.

George Lockwood Edit George Lockwood section

George Lockwood was a Confederate soldier back in 1864 and the first member of the Lockwood family to be cursed with lycanthropy.

Richard Lockwood Edit Richard Lockwood section

Richard Lockwood was the Mayor of Mystic Falls and the father of Tyler Lockwood. Richard has a much younger brother, Mason Lockwood, who is Tyler Lockwood’s uncle. He was married to Carol Lockwood. He had a strained relationship with his son, Tyler and they often did not get along.

It is stated that Richard and his son, Tyler, have both inherited the werewolf gene in their blood, but they are not fully-werewolves, since they need to have killed someone in order to complete the process. He dies in the episode Founders Day, the first season’s finale, when he is mistaken for being a vampire when the towns people were rounding them up.

Carol Lockwood Edit Carol Lockwood section

Carol Lockwood is the wife and widow of Mayor Richard Lockwood. She is very snobbish and is a member of The Founder’s Council. She and her husband had a very strained and often hostile relationship. They were constantly at each others throats, and were constantly arguing. Mrs. Lockwood is also a bad influence on her son, Tyler and his negative behavior comes from both his mother and father.. In season 2, she stepped in her husband’s position as Mayor of Mystic Falls, after her husband died.

Tyler Lockwood

Tyler Lockwood is the son of Mayor Richard Lockwood and his wife Carol Lockwood. He seems to have a very bad attitude which comes from both his parents. Tyler is friends with Matt Donovan. He is the ex-boyfriend of Vicki Donovan. Tyler is athletic and portrays himself as the stereotypical jock. He plays on the Mystic Falls Timberwolves football team, alongside Matt Donovan, who is the quarterback on the and Stefan Salvatore, who is the wide receiver for the team. Tyler generally acts like a bully on most occasions and he likes to torment people, especially other guys who seem more vulnerable then he does.

Tyler is known to get into various altercations with many different people including Stefan Salvatore, Jeremy Gilbert, and Vicki Donovan. Tyler has even gotten into fights with Matt, although the two eventually reconcile their friendship. Despite the mutual animosity that Tyler and Jeremy formerly shared with one another (mostly due to their competition for Vicki), Tyler and Jeremy eventually bond and become friends. Both of them bond over all of the trials and tribulations within their lives, certain hobbies they have in common (such as drawing) supernatural issues, as well as the loss of their loved ones (particularly the death of Tyler’s father and Jeremy’s parents and Vicki Donovan). Tyler often argues with his father and he and his dad did not get along. Things become more complicated for Tyler when his father, Richard Lockwood dies and Tyler’s Uncle – Mason Lockwood - comes to Mystic Falls after his father’s death.

Mason reveals to Tyler that the Lockwood’s are under the Curse of the Werewolf, meaning that the male members of the Lockwood family are all cursed with becoming or shape-shifting into werewolves whenever the full moon occurs. However, Mason told Tyler how this Curse is triggered. Mason tells Tyler that in order for the Werewolf Curse to be triggered and take effect, he (Tyler) has to kill someone, either accidentally or deliberately. If Tyler takes a life, meaning human blood, the Curse within Tyler will take effect and he will change into a Werewolf with every full moon that arises.

At the Lockwood Masquerade Ball, Tyler’s Werewolf Curse is triggered after he gets into a fight with a drunk Matt Donovan, but is then stopped by Caroline Forbes. However, Tyler, by accident, kills a girl named Sarah in self-defense after Caroline warns him, after she (Sarah) was compelled (most likely by Katherine) to stab Tyler in the back with a dagger. Caroline witnesses the accidental death and also witnesses Tyler’s Werewolf Curse being triggered. After everything that happened at the Masquerade ball, Caroline hints to him that she knows that he’s “different” and that she understands, however, Caroline tries to play stupid with him, pretending to not know exactly what Tyler really is.

Since his Curse has been triggered, Tyler has been scared and having a hard time dealing with his new supernatural identity and now that his Uncle Mason is dead (Tyler does not know about his death at all yet and thinks that he left town and went back to Florida), he feels completely alone in all of it. It is then when he turns to Caroline Forbes, who revealed to Tyler that she is a Vampire. They slowly start to bond over their new supernatural identities.

Mason Lockwood

Mason Lockwood is Mayor Richard Lockwood’s younger brother and Tyler Lockwood’s uncle. He bears the Werewolf gene and a somewhat strong resemblance to his nephew Tyler. Mason has been described as the “black sheep” of the Lockwood family by Tyler. Mason claims that he came back to Mystic Falls in order to be there for his family after his brother, Richard’s death. However, as the season progressed, Mason’s true intentions became much clearer. Mason came back to Mystic Falls to obtain a Lockwood artifact, a Moonstone.

The Moonstone is said to have significant supernatural properties and qualities connected to it. The true purpose of the Moonstone is to help break The Sun and The Moon Curse; the Moonstone is what binds the Curse together. Mason desperately tried to look for the Moonstone but had no luck finding it, so he asked for Tyler’s help in searching for it. Tyler finds the Moonstone but keeps it a secret from Mason that he has actually found it and has it hidden in a safe place.

Mason transforms into a Werewolf in the episode “Bad Moon Rising” and goes on the attack against Stefan and Caroline. Since a werewolf’s bite is deadly to a vampire, Stefan and Caroline are deeply in danger. After Tyler stops Mason from attacking both Stefan and Caroline, Mason then shape-shifts back to his human form, revealing to Tyler that he was the Werewolf who attacked Stefan and Caroline. Tyler is both shocked and appalled by this and is curious to learn more about this.

In the episode “Memory Lane”, Mason is invited to Jenna’s barbecue, along with Alaric, Damon, Elena and Caroline. Mason and Jenna both went to high school together and it appears as though Mason and Jenna may have had a fling. It was there, that Damon told Mason that he knows what he is and that Mason also knows about the Salvatores, and that the barbecue was a set-up by Damon in order to get information on Mason and his family of the Lockwood’s. After Damon stabs Mason with a silver knife from Jenna’s silverware, Mason tells Damon that he made an enemy and that he and Stefan better watch their backs.

In Killed Or Be Killed, Stefan tries to make peace with Mason after Damon stabs him, but instead, this only provokes Mason to reveal the truth to Sheriff Liz Forbes, that both Damon (who is Liz’s friend and a member of the Founder’s Council alongside herself) and Stefan Salvatore are vampires. Mason tries to prove this fact to Liz by spiking the lemonade with vervain. When Damon drinks some of the lemonade spiked with vervain, Damon reacts to it and spits it out, revealing that Mason was right. Liz is both disgusted and horrified by the truth and Liz takes immediate action because of Mason’s proof. She takes both Stefan and Damon down to a secluded place where she drugs the both of them with vervain and shoots both Damon and Stefan repeatedly with wooden bullets.

When both Caroline and Elena find out what is going on and how both Stefan and Damon are in danger, Mason confronts Caroline and Elena and threatens the both of them. Caroline gives Mason a physical throw-down and she and Elena go attend to Stefan and Damon, who need help. Mason and Liz’s plan to kill Stefan and Damon, goes astray when Liz and the Sheriffs involved are stopped by both Elena and Liz’s daughter, Caroline. Later on in the episode, Tyler gives in to his Uncle Mason and hands him the Moonstone. Mason thanks Tyler for trusting him enough to give it to him. It is revealed at the end of the episode that Mason has been working for Katherine and using Mason, in order for her to obtain and give her the Moonstone. It also revealed the flashbacks of Katherine was also present when Mason killed his friend in self-defense at a club after they got into a fight over his friend’s girlfriend, Marla. It was then, that Mason’s Werewolf Curse was triggered.

In the episode “Plan B”, Mason hides the Moonstone in a well. But unknown to Stefan, who goes in search of the Moonstone by jumping into the well, it turns out that the well, in which Mason put the Moonstone in, was filled with vervain. Because of this, this caused Stefan to become burned terribly by the vervain when he jumped in to try and get the Moonstone. He was eventually saved by Elena with the help of Bonnie and Caroline. Meanwhile, at the Salvatore Boarding House, Damon with the help of Bonnie, kidnapped Mason. Bonnie used her mind reading on Mason to help track down where the Moonstone could be. Damon then subjected to torturing Mason in order to get answers regarding the Moonstone and his connection to Katherine. Mason said that he got the Moonstone for Katherine because she is in love with him, but much to Damon’s amusement, he tells Mason that she is just using him. Damon kills Mason after ripping his heart out. Damon and Stefan later dispose of his body. Tyler still has no idea that Mason is dead and he believes that Mason has left town and has went back to Florida.

After killing another man, George unknowingly triggered his werewolf curse, causing him to transform into a wolf every full moon. After discovering his true identity, Katherine Pierce convinced George to help her escape during the vampire-hunt the town was planning.

According to Katherine, George Lockwood used the vampires as a scapegoat for the attacks he was responsible for and informed the Founder’s Council about the vampires in Mystic Falls. One day in 1864 George warned Katherine about the round up and when it was suppose to take place. Katherine insisted that before the Church was set ablaze, the body count must be 27, the vampire population of the town including herself. George said he would see to it. Mayor Lockwood had a strained relationship with his son Tyler, and when Tyler got into a fist-fight with Matt Donovan at a party, he told Tyler he would never embarrass his family again. Even though he’s married, he seemed to have a crush on Pearl. Richard was a member of The Founder’s Council.

In the season finale, during Founders Day, John Gilbert talked Richard into sanctioning a strike against the tomb vampires using Johnathan Gilbert’s invention. Richard and John knew that the Sheriff would never approve their plan so they staged a coup against her: Richard rallied her deputies to their cause while John knocked her out and cuffed her in her office. Shortly before it began, he found his son and told him to go home, showing genuine care for Tyler for the first time. Richard and Tyler were both affected by the effects of the invention though, when injected with vervain by the deputies, it didn’t affect Richard. When Damon told him in the burning basement that he was a vampire, Richard staggered into a vampire who snapped his neck.

PersonalityEdit Personality section

Richard loved his family, but had a temper that was probably mixed with the werewolf gene that his family carried. He loved his wife Carol and his son Tyler, despite the two not getting along well. Richard also loved the town and held many festivities and fund-raisers for charity.

He also had a hatred for vampires and he, along with the council, vowed to destroy any that came to town. He often went to the extreme to get what he wanted, like knocking out Sheriff Forbes to prevent her from stopping his rounding up of vampires on Founder’s Day, and trying to force Tyler and Jeremy to fight. Alaric once called him a “douche”, and Tyler once called him a “dick”, but was corrected by his mom to say “jerk”.

He had a rivalry with Jeremy Gilbert because of Vicki, but they have gotten over their differences and currently don’t hate each other.

He was friends with Matt Donovan, but it wasn’t a close friendship and now Matt hates Tyler because of what happened between him and Matt’s mom. He was driving with Matt, taking Caroline home. When the strange device that hurts vampires was activated he started to drive recklessly and crashed his dad’s car. His eyes turned yellow when he was getting checked and were only seen by the paramedic when Tyler was unconscious. Caroline rushes in and breaks up the fight, but Matt struggles to get out of Caroline’s clutches and says that he needs to finish it. Caroline punches him unconscious. Tyler is shocked about what just happened. From behind Sarah grabs a letter-opener from the desk and says “Matt failed. If Matt fails, I can’t” and stabs Tyler in the shoulder, and Tyler pushes her away with great force and she hits her head on the edge of the desk and lands on the floor. On several occasions, Richard has had to step in because Tyler did something in public where Richard felt ashamed of him. Whenever Tyler and Jeremy got into a fight at a Career Night at Mystic Falls High School, Richard and Alaric stopped it, and Richard brought the two of them outside. Tyler’s dad tried to get the two of them to fight each other, even though they didn’t want to fight anymore. Tyler’s dad also had a talk to him when Tyler got into a fight with Matt and told him to never shame his family again. On the Founder’s Day, Richard is angry at Tyler for not going home when he was asked to. It was the night of rounding up the vampires and he didn’t want Tyler to be in danger. This proves that Richard clearly cares about Tyler and his safety even though he doesn’t really show it.

After Richard’s death, Matt Donovan made fun of Tyler’s dad and poured alcohol over his picture. Tyler gets offended and mad proving that while he had a tumultuous relationship with his father, he clearly loved him.

Carol LockwoodEdit Carol Lockwood section

Tyler seems to have grown up with a distant, but somewhat positive relationship with his mother. It is only after the death of his father that Carol began to have a closer relationship with her son. When Mason Lockwood disappeared once again, Carol informed Tyler that “I guess it’s just you and me now.” Although he doesn’t show it, Tyler is clearly fond of his mother.

Jeremy GilbertEdit Jeremy Gilbert section

Jeremy and Tyler were both interested in Vicki. This led to several heated encounters and verbal threats. When Vicki died they seem to have a truce. It is later discovered they both draw and have interest in the fantasy world. When Tyler sees a book full of werewolf drawings he discovers that Jeremy knows his family secret. They now have a seemingly strange friendship. They share a mutual understanding of each other and their families. They have common ground in the tragedies they have both experienced.

Caroline ForbesEdit Caroline Forbes section

Tyler originally disliked Caroline and the two never talked much, but now that they have discovered each other’s secrets, they have a new reaching with each other. In Rose Tyler confronts Caroline in an attempt to find out how she knew about him. Tyler assumes Caroline is a werewolf like him, to which Caroline laughs. Tyler then attempts to force Caroline’s hand by pushing her against the wall in an attempt to get her to fight back. Tyler then finds out that Caroline is a vampire through her own admission. In The Sacrifice Tyler is seen with Caroline as she attempts to help him deal with the fast approaching full moon. Tyler discovers a journal left behind by his uncle Mason, in which he chronicles his first transformation into a werewolf. He also finds a recording of the event to play on his laptop. After seeing the intense pain that Mason experienced during his first transformation, Tyler becomes very worried. In “By the Light of the Moon” Tyler and Caroline prepare for the full moon together, they go to the old Lockwood property (where Mason was first going to change in Bad Moon Rising) and chain Tyler up. Caroline and Tyler wait until finally Tyler begins to change, Tyler yells at Caroline to go but she refuses holding him against her and whispering encouraging words, until she is forced to leave when Tyler tries to kill her. While he still changing Caroline cries helplessly outside not knowing how to help him. After the change is over and Tyler is back to his human form Caroline rushes back in (the room is completely destroyed) and again Caroline is seen to be holding him in the same way. Caroline is shown to be very happy and relieved saying “You’re okay, you made it, you didn’t get out, you’re okay!” But Tyler replies “No, I’m not.”

In The Descent, Tyler develops a romantic feelings towards Caroline after finding out that even though a werewolf bite can kill a vampire, Caroline risked her life to be there for him. He questions whether if Caroline has feelings for him as well. Tyler waits for Caroline at her doorstep and starts asking her why she would risk her life for him. He asks, “If a werewolf bite kills a vampire, why would you risk it?” and Caroline bluntly replies “Because you needed help” and Tyler says, “I could have killed you!” and Caroline replies, “But you didn’t” Tyler is completely thrown off by what Caroline says and tells her that he doesn’t understand her. Caroline gets offended by his surprise of her words and says, “Why is it so hard for you to let someone else help you?/ It’s like you don’t want anyone to care about you” Then Tyler kisses Caroline not letting her finish what she was saying. Caroline returns the kiss but quickly pushes him away. In, Daddy Issues, after Jules tells Tyler that Caroline has been lying to him about Mason and other vampires in town, he feels very betrayed and hurt, not only because he trusted her but because he developed feelings towards her as well. Jules locks Caroline up as a hostage to get Tyler back from Stefan. Even though Tyler helps Caroline get out of the cage she was trapped in, he doesn’t do anything when Jules captures her again and tries to kill her. Caroline now feels betrayed by Tyler and makes it clear that she no longer wants to be friends with Tyler when he comes to see if she’s okay and to apologize. In Crying Wolf, Caroline avoids Tyler when he tries to talk to her and tells him to stay away from her. Tyler, feeling confused and lost decides to leave town with Jules. Before leaving, Tyler confesses to Matt that Caroline has been there for him through his tough times and he eventually has developed feelings for her. But even though he loves Caroline, Tyler tells Matt that Caroline deserves a good guy like Matt and that Matt should be good to her. After talking to Matt, Tyler goes to Caroline’s doorstep but he is hesitant to ring the doorbell and just gets a quick glance of her before he leaves without saying goodbye.

PersonalityEdit Personality section

Mason is described as Tyler’s “cool” uncle, Mason is sexy and athletic and possesses an easygoing charm. Though he has more control than his nephew, he can “flip in an instant” if crossed. He’s in love with Katherine, and would do anything for her. He would die for her. However, he doesn’t seem to trust her, as he hid the moonstone at the bottom of a well with vervain. Mason does care about his nephew, Tyler, but his main purpose was always to get the moonstone.

Season Two

Mason returns to town for his brother, Richards’ funeral saying that he had not seen Tyler since he was about 10 meaning he’s been gone from Mystic Falls for 7+ years. Mason later catches Tyler and Jeremy drinking beer and hints for Jeremy to leave. He drinks with his nephew afterwards. Later while Tyler is in the same room and breaks one of his fathers picture. Enraged he tries to attack his mom, but Mason comes in and stops him knocking Tyler down onto the floor. Mason’s nephew was confused as to why he got like that, mad so easily, and Mason told him it was the Lockwood curse.Mason’s eyes

In Brave New World Mason goes to the carnival and competes against Tyler and Stefan in a arm wrestling match. Mason later defended Tyler when Carter picked fight with him, showing his immense strength taking down the latter with a simple slap. He jumped really high and Tyler saw his eyes for a second.

In Bad Moon Rising it’s shown that he went to some underground cell (like a tomb) and tied himself up with chains because he can’t control himself when he’s in werewolf form which only happens on a full moon.

In Memory Lane, Mason discovers the Salvatore brothers are vampires after being invited to Jenna’s party. When Tyler questions him about the werewolf curse, he reveals you must kill someone in order to change.

In Kill or Be Killed, Mason tells Liz Forbes about the Salvatores and finally attains the Moonstone from Tyler Mason and Lizand delivers it to his “boss” and supposed new girlfriend Katherine Pierce. It’s also revealed that he has been working for her for at least the past year after meeting her in Florida’s Emerald Coast. It is implied that she compelled his friend Jimmy to pick a fight with him. He accidentally caused a fatal blow to his friend’s head, while trying to defend himself. This clearly triggered the curse as Mason’s eyes turned yellow. It is actually Katherine who seeks the moonstone, not Mason, and she wanted it to break The Sun and Moon curse.

In Plan B Damon kidnapped him with the help of Bonnie and tortured him. Later he killed him by ripping his heart out.

Later Tyler and Caroline found a video in the cellar that Mason made to record his first transformation.

A group of werewolves lead by Jules came to find justice for his death.

Mini-Biography: Tyler Lockwood, Werewolf Candidat

Tyler Lockwood is as much a part of Mystic Falls as any other member of the ‘Founding Families’. The Founding Families are, well, exactly what they sound like; the ancestors responsible for founding Mystic Falls, as screwy and weird as the place is. The families who founded the town were steeped in secrecy, and at one point, vampires were a common problem that everyone recognized and dealt with. The Lockwoods, the Forbes’, the Gilberts, and the Salvatores, are the most prominent families on the Council.

The Council is the secret society dedicated to protecting Mystic Falls from vampires, and possibly, other supernatural entities. In the book series, Tyler Lockwood is a werewolf. It was recently revealed that werewolves would soon join the supernatural characters in the television show, around the end of season 1, or possibly, the beginning of season 2. Either way, the frontrunner for the position of ‘local werewolf’, is Tyler Lockwood. Tyler grew up in Mystic Falls, and he’s everything an upper crust, small town jock should be.

He’s the son of Mayor Lockwood, a harsh, domineering man whose business persona is as successful as his fatherly persona is not, –and you may toss in the husband figure down there on his list of failures too. Not only is he constantly flirting, but there’s always a hint of an affair right around the edges, –and his wife isn’t exactly mother of the year, or the poster-girl for loyalty either, for that matter.

Tyler Lockwood is on the football team, performs fairly well in school, and seems like the type of guy who could get any cheerleader he wanted. And yet, he chose Vickie Donovan, the essential ‘girl from the wrong side of the tracks.’ When Vickie flipped out, turned into a vampire, and was secretly killed by Stefan Salvatore, she disappeared. Tyler never seemed too broken up about it, but maybe only because Vickie seemed to be more interested in younger, edgier Jeremy Gilbert, whose feelings seemed more genuine. Tyler’s rocky romance with Vickie was deeply troublesome, because of his parents’ disapproval.

Tyler’s aggression seems to grow as the series progresses; he comes close to fighting Jeremy several times before the two get into a full fledged fist-fight at a football game. Also the game where history teacher/football coach Mr. Tanner is killed by Damon Salvatore. Despite Jeremy’s attempts to make peace later on, Tyler punches him in the face, –though he immediately regrets it, he makes no move to rectify the situation. A more recent example of Tyler’s tendency towards violence can be found in Episode 18, when Matt finds him making out with Kelly, Matt’s mother.

Matt punches Tyler, and the two go down; Tyler quickly gains the upper hand, and begins ruthlessly beating his own best friend. Though Alaric Saltzman, the new history teacher and resident mystery man intent on revenge, –tries to pry them apart, Mayor Lockwood takes control, and sends Tyler to get cleaned up. Later, Mayor Lockwood catches Tyler alone. Tyler tries to explain, but his fathers slaps him hard across the face, and warns him not to embarrass the family again.

Tyler out of control aggression, raging animosity, and seemingly uncontrollable sexual urges make him a prime candidate for werewolf-ism. Plus, there’s the whole thing with his father, obviously a lot of bottled up aggression there. I predict Tyler’s character becoming much more important in the second season, perhaps even late in the first season; maybe some big revelation during the last episode. Something to torture us until the premier of season 2. Either way, I’m stoked to see a werewolf join the cast!

Keck’s Exclusives: The Werewolf Diaries

Don’t get a Lockwood angry. You won’t like them when they’re angry. In The Vampire Dairies‘ September 9 premiere, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) is surprised to see his long-absent, black sheep of the family Uncle Mason (Taylor Kinney) turn up for the funeral of his dad, the mayor. But a bigger surprise comes when Mason drops the bomb that werewolfism runs in the Lockwood bloodline!

“Mason has learned to harness his rage and is going to serve as a mentor to Tyler,” says Taylor. “I’ve come to teach Tyler that there are choices he can make to control his destiny as a human…or otherwise.”

Nina Dobrev (Elena/Katherine) adds, “Taylor’s been adjusting really well. I don’t envy when new people come [on set] because we’ve all already created this family bond, but everyone’s really accepted him.” The same won’t hold true in Mystic Falls, reveals Ian Somerhalder (Damon). “Mason’s a really nice guy, but Damon makes it difficult for him to be nice,” says Ian. “He really pisses Damon off.”

“Yeah, we don’t get along,” echoes Taylor. “Historically, the Salvatores haven’t gotten along with the Lockwoods for ages, and having a new Lockwood in town doesn’t sit well.”

It hasn’t been lost on him that he’s following in the werewolf paw prints of another famous Taylor — Twilight hottie Taylor Lautner. “My brother gave me a few ‘Team Jacob’ magnets to mess with me,” says Taylor, who apparently sports impressive abs of his own. “I don’t know if I stack up to Mr. Lautner, but we’ll see.”

As for competing with all those sexy werewolves on a certain HBO series, Taylor says he finds it perplexing that “every time a werewolf takes off his pants on True Blood, he transforms.” Mason’s transformation will be more traditional—dependent upon a full moon. And the actor says he’s well-equipped for his first howling scene. “I grow hair like crazy!”
