“The Vampire Diaries” season 4 will continue next week with “The Rager,” episode 3, which will introduce a new character in Phoebe Tonkin’s Hayley, and in an interview Entertainment Weekly shared Thursday, Julie Plec addressed what she could mean for Caroline and Tyler’s relationship.
Hayley is the werewolf who helped Tyler break the sire bond to Klaus last season, so Klaus isn’t exactly going to be happy with her either—if he knows that who’s she is, of course. Either way, he’ll see her as someone he can use to try to get between Caroline and Tyler (he’s not over Caroline, and we have to admit, we like seeing him pursue her even though we would never want to see anything happen—Klaus is still Klaus). According to Plec:
“The expression of glee that Klaus gets on his face when he realizes that Tyler might have been holding this as a secret from Caroline is priceless. Klaus is up to no good for a good portion of this season. He’s not on his best behavior. But watching him try to drive a wedge between Caroline and Tyler with just the control of gossip is actually superfun. Of course, Tyler is gonna have to try to take back that power and save his relationship and convince Caroline that she can still trust him.”
We can’t wait to see how this plays out, but considering what Caroline and Tyler have been through, they deserve to have some time together—and to be happy during that time. It seems like they’re always being interrupted by some sort of danger or some kind of drama, and that’s just going to happen once more with Hayley in time. But what will Tyler be keeping from Caroline about his experience with Hayley? Is it as bad as Klaus is hoping so he can use it to his advantage? We would think that Caroline would be at least a bit grateful to Hayley since she helped Tyler break the bond, but is there more to the new werewolf in town than meets the eye? That’s what we’re expecting because this is “The Vampire Diaries” after all.
In the end, we expect poor Klaus (at least in this regard) to once again lose out and for Tyler to fully explain himself to Caroline and keep her from being too angry about anything he may not have told her. We’d also like to see Caroline and Hayley bond at a certain point (though we don’t know how likely that is) if only to see Klaus’ reaction once he learns that his plan to get between the vampire he wants and the hybrid she loves isn’t working.
Julie Plec has gone on the record as saying, “The Triangle Has Been Reset” this season in regards to Elena’s emotional tug-of-war with Damon and Stefan. But the truth of the matter is, for the first few season four episodes, the triangle hasn’t just been reset, it’s totally shifted to Klaus, Caroline and Tyler!
With the Original vampire currently inhabiting the hybrid hottie’s body, Caroline’s feelings have never been more mixed — and just wait until she gets wise to this fanged Freaky Friday!
And since you’ve all been such good boys and girls over this (never-ending) hiatus, I’ve snagged an exclusive portrait featuring Mystic Falls’ latest and greatest love triangle!
“AMOR HABET ME” – Love possesses Me. ( Tyler )
“AMOR EST IMMOLARE” – Love is Sacrifice ( Caroline )
“SANGUIS POTESTAS EST” – Blood is Power. ( Klaus)
Joseph Morgan talks about season 4. But who are we kidding, he could talk about anything and we’d listen. Catch the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries Oct. 11.
“The Secret Circle” spitfire Phoebe Tonkin has landed a juicy recurring role on Season 4 of “The Vampire Diaries” as Hayley, a friend of Tyler’s (Michael Trevino). First appearing in episode 3, 19-year-old Hayley is “wildly sexy” — with a tough, intimidating side that could just give Caroline (Candice Accola) a run for her money.
Let’s just hope that by the time Hayley surprises Tyler in Mystic Falls, he’s back to actually being Tyler.
Best known in the U.S. for her witchy ways on “TSC,” Tonkin made a splash in Australia on “H2O: Just Add Water,” where she played a mermaid alongside her soon-to-be “Vampire Diaries” costar (and off-screen bestie) Claire Holt.
“The Vampire Diaries” returns Thursday, October 11 at 8 p.m. EST.
There was a jaw-dropping moment at the end of the Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale — and we’re not talking about the last three seconds of the episode. Before that, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) revealed that he’d taken over Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) body and stolen a kiss from his minion’s girl. Julie Plec told Wetpaint Entertainment at the CBS TCA All-Star Party that Klaus’s antics aren’t over yet when the show returns in Season 4, and Caroline (Candice Accola) isn’t going to be a happy vampire.
Wetpaint Entertainment: As far as Klaus is in Tyler’s body. What happens next?
Julie Plec: What happens next is some awkward, ill‑timed, mischievous and otherwise naughty high jinks that begin and end quickly enough to still be fun, but definitely make Caroline very indignant.
So Klaus is definitely taking advantage of the fact that he is in Tyler’s body?
I don’t think he necessarily means to take advantage of that, but there is a moment in which — there is a shirt that comes off under false pretenses. So we’ll just leave it at that.
Michael Trevino already said that Tyler comes back into his own body fairly soon. Are we done with Joseph Morgan?
No. Joseph Morgan will be right back. The minute Tyler’s back in his own body, Joseph will be back in his. A little bit charred and worse for the wear, but he’s a vampire, he can heal.
What should we know about the Tyler, Caroline, and Klaus triangle?
I think the important thing to know is that Caroline loves Tyler deeply. Caroline, especially after the first episode, will continue to loathe Klaus in spite of her strange fascination with him that sneaks in every now and then. Klaus is not giving up on Caroline, but he’s by no means going to be a sick puppy dog. In fact, I think, he’s going to get some perverse pleasure out of seeking alternate means to drive a wedge between Caroline and Tyler over the course of the season. So it’s a slow play. He’s a long-term thinker, Klaus.
The Season 3 finale of Vampire Diaries had Bonnie (Kat Graham) secretly in cahoots with Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Those two will still be working together when Season 4 starts, because the Original Vampire will continue to play in Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) body for a bit and Bonnie’s the only one who knows the truth. Starry Constellation magazine spoke with Julie Plec about what the characters will get up to in October, and whether Klaus will be back in his own body soon.
According to Julie, J. Morg will embody Klaus pretty quickly. “He’ll probably need to do a couple shots of blood to heal himself back up. There is a line, ‘Fate and oxygen intervened and here I am,’” she says. At least Caroline (Candice Accola) will be relieved he can’t sneak any more kisses, right? But the hybrid has bigger problems than unattainable blondes. Julie explains, “He’s a guy whose entire agenda was born out of wanting to produce hybrids and really that was just a mask for needing a family. His mom kind of threw down the gauntlet late in the season by saying, ‘I’m not going to rest until I’ve protected myself from the likes of you.’ He’s back on the hybrid trail and his only power source has just turned off.” That power source is Elena (Nina Dobrev), of course. Now that she’s a vampire, her doppelganger blood is useless to Klaus.
It seems likely that Klaus will hunt down any solution, and if there’s a problem, yo, Bonnie can grimoire it. And Bonnie isn’t done with the dark stuff. “Bonnie tapped into something really dark at the end of last season and at the beginning of this season she’s going to have to go back there and tap into it again,” says Julie. “Her journey for this season will be predicated on the outcome of that attempt, what happens and what it does to her.”
While Bonnie probably isn’t jumping at the chance to collaborate with Klaus again, she does have an interest in protecting him, because he’s head of a pretty important bloodline. But maybe she’s looking for a cure to vampirism, instead…
